Start With The Opening, Not The Old Door
A replacement entry door only works when the measurements are based on the opening, not on a door slab that may already be warped, swollen, or trimmed out of square.
If the existing door still closes, use it as a reference, but do not trust it blindly.
You will want a tape measure, a pencil, and a level if you have one.
That choice changes everything about the numbers you need.
Take Three Measurements, Not One
Start with the width of the opening.
Next, measure the height from the floor or threshold to the underside of the header on the left, center, and right sides.
A deeper wall may need jamb extensions so the new door sits flush with both sides of the opening.
If the bottom edge has been altered, note that before you order anything.
Here is the part that matters most in the field: measure more than once.
Those numbers help identify whether you need a standard replacement door or a custom-size door installation solution.
Check For Square, Level, And Clearance Before You Order
You also need to check diagonals, plumb, and level so the new door will swing cleanly and seal properly.
If they are off by more than a little, expect shimming, trimming, or frame correction during installation.
Use a level on the side jambs and header if you have one, or watch for obvious leaning and bowing.
Stand on the outside of the home and decide whether you need a left-hand or right-hand inswing or outswing door.
Look at the space around the opening too.
Slab replacements can work well when the existing frame is still solid and square, but they leave less room for correction.
What To Write Down Before You Place The Order
You do not need fancy software to get this right, but you do need a clear record of the numbers and the conditions around the opening.
At minimum, record these details:
- Top, middle, and bottom width measurements Left, center, and right height measurements Wall thickness or jamb depth Door swing direction and handing Threshold condition and any visible damage
Those details help prevent the most common ordering errors.
Take photos as well, especially if you are ordering remotely.
If your home has historic trim, unusual siding, or an older opening that does not match modern standard sizes, say that up front.
When To Stop Measuring And Bring In A Pro
If the frame is rotten, the opening is badly out of square, or the threshold has water damage, it is smart to bring in a specialist before ordering.
You should also get help if you are unsure whether you need a slab, a prehung unit, or a full frame replacement.
This is also where quality material selection matters.
That process is simple, but it is exactly how experienced installers protect themselves from bad orders and unnecessary callbacks.
